Description

Scientific Name: Siganus stellatus

Common Names: Spotted Rabbitfish, Starry Rabbitfish, Spotted Foxface

Maximum Length: 12 inches (30 cm)

Minimum Aquarium Size: 100 gallons (380 liters)

Aquarium Suitability: The Siganus stellatus is ideal for large, well-maintained reef tanks or fish-only aquariums. Due to its potential size and active swimming nature, it requires a spacious tank with plenty of swimming room. This peaceful species can coexist with other non-aggressive fish but is best kept in larger aquariums to ensure it has enough space to thrive.

Foods & Feeding: The Starry Rabbitfish is herbivorous, feeding primarily on algae and plant matter. In captivity, provide a variety of algae-based foods, such as nori, spirulina, and algae wafers, to keep it healthy. You can also supplement its diet with occasional fresh vegetables like spinach or lettuce. Adding meaty foods like shrimp or mysis occasionally will ensure a well-rounded diet, though its main food source should remain plant-based.

Reef Compatibility: The Siganus stellatus is generally reef-safe, making it a good addition to reef aquariums. While it may occasionally graze on certain macroalgae or soft corals, it generally doesn’t pose a threat to more established corals or invertebrates. Its herbivorous diet helps control unwanted algae growth in the tank, making it a beneficial fish for reef tanks with ample plant and algae growth.

Captive Care: This species is relatively hardy and does well in aquariums with stable water parameters. A Tank with live rock and plenty of hiding spots is recommended to provide shelter and grazing opportunities. While peaceful, it can sometimes show territorial behavior toward other rabbitfish or similar species, so providing plenty of space and hiding spots is essential for reducing aggression.

The Siganus stellatus is a stunning addition to larger aquariums, offering both beauty and practicality with its vibrant spotted appearance and algae-eating habits. It’s a great choice for aquarists looking to add a peaceful, functional fish to their reef or community tank.
