Methylene blue does two things at once: it carries oxygen for fish in distress (ammonia poisoning, gill damage, transport shock) and acts as a mild antifungal for egg and external infections. The blue dye binds methemoglobin back to functional hemoglobin — the chemistry behind why a fish gasping at the surface goes back to normal breathing within minutes of a methylene blue bath. Every FisHotel intake bag gets a methylene blue dip before the fish even sees a quarantine tank.
Active ingredient: methylene blue. Used as a short bath for shock or ammonia, or at a much lower dose in display tanks for egg fungus. Stains everything it touches blue, including silicone tank seals — accept it. For exact dosing per gallon, see the Misc tab on our Medication Dosing Calculator.
Treats: ammonia poisoning, methemoglobinemia, transport shock, egg fungus (Saprolegnia), mild external fungal and bacterial infections.
Use in: quarantine, hospital tank, or transport buckets — short bath only in display.
Reef safe: at low dose for a short period, yes — but stains everything blue.
