Description

Scientific Name: Chaetodon reticulatus

Common Names: Reticulated Butterflyfish, Mailed Butterflyfish, Black Butterflyfish

Maximum Length: 7.1 inches (18 cm)

Minimum Aquarium Size: 125 gallons (473 liters)

Foods and Feeding Habits: Omnivorous; primarily feeds on coral polyps, especially Pocillopora, and some algae in the wild. In aquariums, offer live coral, live zooplankton, frozen mysis shrimp, or specialized coral-based foods. Feed 2-3 times daily in small amounts. May refuse prepared foods initially, requiring live coral or clams to stimulate feeding.

Reef Safety: Not reef-safe; heavily reliant on coral polyps for diet, making it destructive to stony and soft corals. Best suited for fish-only tanks or specialized setups with sacrificial corals.

Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive; generally calm but may compete with other butterflyfish or similar species over food or territory. Best housed with peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates. Keep singly or as a bonded pair in larger tanks to minimize conflicts.

Description: The Chaetodon reticulatus is a bold and elegant choice for hobbyists who value striking patterns and are prepared for its specialized care. Its deep black body, overlaid with a delicate network of white and yellow spots, creates a mesmerizing, lattice-like appearance that commands attention in any aquarium. Aquarists are captivated by its graceful gliding, as it navigates live rock or inspects food sources, exuding a quiet confidence. A spacious 125-gallon tank with ample rockwork and open swimming space accommodates its active nature, while a diet focused on coral-based foods or live zooplankton sustains its health. Its dependence on corals makes it a fish-only tank standout, ideal for experienced keepers willing to meet its unique dietary needs for a truly distinctive display.
