Description
Scientific Name: Pterapogon kauderni
Common Names: Banggai Cardinalfish, Kaudern’s Cardinal
Maximum Length: 3 inches (8 cm)
Minimum Aquarium Size: 30 gallons (113 liters) for a single fish or pair; 50 gallons (189 liters) for a small group. Their small size and calm nature suit modest tanks, but more space supports their schooling behavior.
Foods and Feeding Habits: Carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In aquariums, provide frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood, plus quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed small amounts 1-2 times daily.
Reef Safety: Reef-safe; they don’t harm corals or most invertebrates, making them a great choice for reef tanks.
Temperament: Peaceful with a shy streak, Banggai Cardinalfish do best in pairs or small groups with one male. They’re non-aggressive but may have minor squabbles if crowded.
Description: The Banggai Cardinalfish is a favorite for its striking look and easy care. Their black stripes, silvery bodies, and white spots stand out in any tank. Native to Indonesia’s Banggai Archipelago, they thrive with hiding spots like live rock or corals and some open swimming space. Their low-maintenance needs suit both new and experienced aquarists. They often hover together in small groups, adding a calm presence to the aquarium.
Fun Facts:
Males are mouthbrooders, carrying eggs in their mouths until they hatch, protecting the young.
They’re found only around the Banggai Islands in the wild, making them a unique addition.
Their small size and hardy nature make them surprisingly easy to care for with proper setup.
